“IntraEdge assisted in the development of a high-quality user interface for our e-vive muscle stimulation project.  Their emphasis on end user experience during the interface design of the App provides for easy navigation and display of complex data.  Expert developers at IntraEdge assisted our team to ensure the high reliability and quality required to use as part of a medical device. The project was managed professionally and was staffed for responsiveness to our needs.”

IntraEdge partnered with CyMedica Orthopedics to develop a wireless muscle stimulation system that patients can control from their iOS or Android device.

A patient undergoes knee surgery. To recover more quickly, they wear a device on their leg that electrically stimulates the muscles. What’s more – they use their iPad or Samsung phone to safely control the level of stimulation whenever and wherever they want. They store data about their progress and tele-share it with their doctor. The result: Not only do they feel more engaged and empowered, but they also reduce the risk of complications or the need for extra rehabilitation.

CyMedica Orthopedics develops and manufactures the world’s only closed-loop muscle activation system with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) therapy individualized for each patient’s comfort and convenience. CyMedica already had a primary muscle stimulation product known as the QB1, a large, wired device with limited capabilities that was cumbersome for the patient to carry around. IntraEdge was selected to develop a new, innovative application that would pair with a wireless therapy garment, which patients could use their smartphone or tablet to control.

“It’s a core belief of ours that one of the keys to improving outcomes is actively engaging patients.” said CyMedica, about empowering patients. “We’re removing the barriers that prevent patients from fully engaging with the rehabilitation process.”

IntraEdge initially created the designs for the mobile application, ensuring an appropriate look and feel.  After winning rave trade show reviews, CyMedica tapped IntraEdge to develop the working application.

The challenge?  The design had to work for both iOS and Android devices.  This meant there were multiple screen sizes, hardware and OS versions that affected layout, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) stack and software features.

“There was a high level of complexity and diverse factors that we had to solve,” said Project Delivery Manager of IntraEdge. “We were basically designing for everybody’s smartphone.”

Developers worked closely with CyMedica engineers to ensure that data from the application and therapy device could be captured. As a result of the collaboration between IntraEdge and CyMedica, the e-vive system received FDA 510(k) clearance and passed Apple store review with only minimal edits.

CyMedica is now discussing how IntraEdge can continue to make enhancements to the application as the technology evolves.
